I ABSTRACT DOCTOR TESIS INVESTIGATIONS ON THE INHERITANCE OF EARLINESS AND CERTAIN AGRONOMIC CHARACTERS IN COTTON (Gossypium hirsutum L.) Aydın ÜNAY Trakya university Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Agronomy Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Süer YÜCE Jury: Prof. Dr. Süer YÜCE This research was carried out to select the suitable parets and hybrid, to investigate the genetical structure, to evaluate Fl hybrid vigor and useful heterosis in a line*tester analysis involving 4 female and 7 male parentsof cotton (.Gossypium hirsutum L.) in the experimental field of Mediterranean Agricultural Research Institute. In the study, the population to be studied was obtained by line*tester crossing method. According to this method, cotton cultivars, Acala SJ 5, Stonoville 825 N, GP 3774, Lambright X 15-4, Tamcot CAMD E, HYC 7659 and PD 4548 as line, and Çukurova 1518, Nazilli 84, Deltapine 50, B 6396 and C 4727 as tester were used.IV According to the results of this research; parents and crosses were significant for all characters except vertical and horizantal flowering intervals, number of bolls per plant, production rate index and fiber stregth. The ratio of general combining ability to specific combining ability showed that horizantal flowering interval, production rate index, number of bolls per plant, seed cotton yield per plant and fiber lenght were influenced by non-additive gene effects; the other characters by additive gene effects. It was usually found positive heterosis for all characters except plant height, fibre lenght and fibre finesess and positive heterobel tiosi s for vertical flowering interval, mean maturity date, first picking percentage, plant height and fibre finesess. The promising parets and hybrids were determined for different investigated characters. KEY WORDS: Line*tester, general and specific combining ability, additive and non-additive gene effects, heterosis, heterobeltiosis and useful heterosis
