Abstract
Mixing and compaction temperatures of Bituminous Hot Mixtures (BHM) are determined according to the bitumen viscosity. These temperature values, determined without considering the aggregate properties, can be 10 to 30ºC higher than the temperatures required for the suitable mixture production. In this thesis, a method is developed for determination of the mixing temperature of BHM. The purpose is to reveal the role of the aggregate properties as well as the binder viscosity in the determination of the mixing temperatures for the BHM. In this method, the temperature at which the bitumen completely coats the aggregate particles is searched keeping the mixing conditions constant. Moreover, the effects of the nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS), crushed course aggregate ratio (CCAR), gradation type and penetration of bitumen are studied for the suitable mixing temperatures required. The proposed method gives on the average 13ºC lower mixing temperatures in comparison to the conventional method. Three different mixtures are produced by Marshall and Superpave Mix Design at temperatures obtained from both conventional and proposed method. It is seen that the mixes produced by two methods have similar volumetric properties and approximately same optimum bitumen content. In order to predict the mixing temperatures, two dependable statistical models having high coefficient of determination (0,99) are developed by the methods of the regression and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). It is calculated that 4,3x1012 kcal/year energy may be saved by this method in the world.
