Abstract
In this study, the preparation of activated carbon from plant wastes, the characterization of produced activated carbon and the optimization of production conditions were aimed. For this, the rosehip seeds, cornelian cherry stones, oleaster seeds, cottonseeds and pine sawdust, which are formed from some of the process and producing stages, were used as raw materials. The chemical activation was preferred for the activation carbon from raw materials which are characterized by thermal, elemental, proximate and FT-IR analysis. The effect of impregnant and raw material type, impregnation ratio, impregnation time and carbonization temperature on the surface area and methylene blue sorption capacities of produced activated carbons were investigated. The raw materials impregnated with ZnCl2 and K2CO3 in different ratio (0.5-2.0 w/w) and times (1-3 hours) were heated to different carbonization temperatures (300-800oC) under N2 atmosphere with constant heating rate (100C/min). The specific surface area and methylene blue index of produced activated carbons were determined by gas adsorption and methylene blue adsorption from aqueous solution, respectively. The optimization of the experimental parameters was done by using MINITIAB 15 software. The activated carbon samples with 1408, 1549, 1813, 1372, and 1825 m2/g surface area were produced by using ZnCl2 at low temperatures for rosehip seeds, cornelian cherry stones, oleaster seeds, cottonseeds and pine sawdust, respectively. The experimental results show that surface area values of the samples in the ZnCl series are much higher than in the K2CO3 series. It was determined that the process parameters such as impregnate type, impregnation ratio, impregnation time, and carbonization temperature have significant effect on the surface properties of produced activated carbons.
