Abstract
In our study two different tests were applied on preschool hearing impaired children in order to evaluate their ability of perception, coding at memory and transformation the auditory stimulus to verbal statements and motor movements. The first test included the evaluation of selfcare, motor, cognitive, social and language development areas. The second test included ` listening `, ` naming ` and ` drawing ` sounds (baby, dog and car) which has a different kinds of frequency (pitch). 21 hearing impaired children from 3 different rehabilitation centers in Ankara participated in our study. The children had severe, profound or corner type of hearing loss. They had hearing aids and passed from auditory discrimination stage of auditory rehabilitation. The children who had hearing impairments didn' t have any other handicaps. As a control grup 21 normally hearing children who attend to preschool were involved in our study. As a result of our study the hearing impaired group had lower percentage of success at all of the developmental areas than the normally hearing group. The normally hearing group was more successful than the hearing impaired group at naming, discriminating, and percepting psycho-physically the ` baby `, ` dog ` and ` car ` sounds which has a different kinds of frequency (pitch). However, in the subgroups of hearing impaired children the success of naming decreased depending on the degree of hearing impairment. 95The hearing impaired children who attend family counselling programs, wear hearing aids at a very young age, attend special education programs and preschool education were particularly more successful than the opposite groups. As a conclusion, the results from our study show that the early detection of hearing loss, attending a total rehabilitation program and entegration with normally hearing children are important developments at hearing impaired children.
