Abstract
This study was carried out to determine effects of drop height of seed and ground speed for different tillage conditions on horizontal and vertical distribution uniformity of seeds, plant emergence rate, mean emergence date, emergence rate index, multiple index, miss index and quality of feed index and on some physical properties of soil for planting of seeds sunflower and maize in precision vacuum seeders. The values of seed spacing and deviation from row were measured to determine the horizontal distribution uniformity of seeds, and seeding depth after emergence was measured in determination of vertical distribution uniformity of seeds. Mean emergence dates and emergence rate index were calculated to determine emergence date of seeds. Soil moisture variation, bulk density, porosity, penetration resistance of soil, surface roughness of soil and soil particle size distribution were also measured after sowing. The experiments were carried out for the conventional and reduced tillage conditions with seed drop heights of 12, 18 and 24 cm and ground speeds of 1,1, 1,5 and 2,2 m s-1 at two seperate field for sunflower and maize. The main experimental set up was randomized factorial design in three repetitions. According to the analysis results, tillage method were founded to have statistically significant (P<0,05) effect on seed spacing for maize, whereas, it was found very significant (P<0,01) for sunflower. The effects of drop height of seed and ground speed on deviation from row and sowing depth were very significant (P<0,01) both in sunflower and maize. The best seed drop height and ground speed were determined as 18 cm and 1,1 m s-1 for the seed distribution uniformity of the horizontal and vertical plane, respectively. In terms of tillage method for sunflower and maize, the closest values to the nominal distance were obtained at the reduced tillage method. The highest plant emergence rates were founded at the reduced tillage method for sunflower and maize as 79% and 88%, respectively. The lowest mean emergence dates and the highest emergence rate index were 10 day and 0,19 seedlings/day m in reduced tillage method for sunflower, respectively. The same parameters were 12 day and 0,36 seedlings/day m in reduced tillage method for maize, respectively. While the ground speed had no effect on mean emergence dates and emergence rate index, the mean emergence dates increased and the emergence rate index decreased as the drop height of seed was increased. While the lowest multiple index was determined at the ground speeds of 2,2 m s-1 for sunflower and 1,1 m s-1, for maize and the seed drop height of 18 cm, the lowest miss index was determined at the ground speed of 1,1 m s-1 and the seed drop height of 18 cm for sunflower and maize. The highest quality of feed index for sunflower and maize were determined at conventional tillage method and reduced tillage method. These values for sunflower and maize were 85% and 82%, respectively. Keywords: Precision seeder, sowing, seed drop height, forward speed, tillage, seed distribution, sunflower, maize.
