Abstract
In this study, the removal of Reactive Blue 21 and Reactive Red 250 dyestuffs in the continious fixed bed column system was investigated using the shells of Cucurbita Moschata biomass The effects of pH,inlet Reactive Blue 21 and Reactive Red 25 0concentrations, bed height, flow rate and particlesize parameters were reseached on the adsorption studies. Continuous biosorption studies were conducted to define the relationship between the observed and predicted breakthrough curves in the removal of ReactiveBlue21 and Reactive Red 250 dyes tuffs from the synthetic aqueous solutions. Cucurbita Moschata shells were used in a fixed bed column as packing materials. The effects of inlet dyestuff concentration, flow rate, bed height, initial solution pH and particle size on the observed and predicted breakthrough curves were investigated. Three kinetic models, Thomas, Adams-Bohart and Yoon-Nelson, were applied to experimental data to predict the breakthrough curves, and to determine the characteristic parameters of the column that are useful for the column design. The fİxed bed column model studies of the dyestuffs indicated that the Yoon-Nelson model for ReactiveBlue21 [R2 (0.99-0.96) and APE (17.10-1.22)] and ReactiveRed250 [R2 (0.99-0.96) and APE (9.60-0.29)] was suitable to describe the biosorption equilibrium of Reactive Blue21 andReactiveRed250, whereas the Thomas and Adams-Bohart models were unable to describe the biosorpstion equilibrium of ReactiveBlue21 andReactiveRed250 because of low R2 and high APE values. The results ofthe investigation carried out by Cucurbita Moschata shells shows that the shells are effectivein the removal of ReactiveBlue21 and ReactiveRed250 and it was observed that the removal of ReactiveBlue21 is better than that of ReactiveRed250. In the experiments,we used Cucurbita Moschata shells as adsorbentdue to beingcheap, easily obtainable andhighadsorbentcapable. ıt was concluded that the shells could be preferredin the removal of dyestuff from process wastewaters
