Abstract
These two different ri.fti.ngB oocured at the northern margin of the Gondwana Permian Carbonate Platform. The Kırşe hir Block might have been situated between this newly opened oceanic basins, transpressive strike-slip movements might have brought these realms into their current positions. ABSTRACT The Munzur Mountains, which reflect typical 1 y the geolo gical peculiarities of the Taurides, are situated at the north-eastern end of this unit. In this investigation, the subsequent formations have been distinguished from bottom to top. Munzur Limestone (Liassic-Early Cretaceous) Uluyamaç Ophio lithe (Jurassic-Cretaceous) Eriç Melange (Late Campanian-Early Maastrichtian) Yakuplu Plutone (Paleocene ?) Haslar Andesite (Paleocene ?) Dedek Formation (Eocene) Kemah Formation (Miocene) Terrace and alluvions (Quaternery) The uppermost levels of the Munzur Limestone, which were deposited on an isolated carbonate platform, include biomic- rits with Globotruncana. These biomicrits were formed as a consequence of the breaking and sudden collapse of the plat form. The Uluyamaç Ophiolithe that does not manifest a uni form form sequence in the area, consist of ophiolithic rocks following nontabular appearance. The Eriç Melange is made up of a chaotic mixture of rock blocks of different ages and facieses in a pelagic matrix. Both of these lithostratigrap- hic units are in tectonic contact with each other and with the Munzur Limestone. Both the I -type Yakuplu Plutone, which were formed as a consequence of partial melting of the sub ducting oceanic crust and of the mantel material, and Haslar Andesite, crosscut all the rocks already present. The Dedek and Kemah formations inconf ormably overlay the other units. In the study area, the first tectonic movements begun subsequent to Cenomanian. Within the period of Late Creta ceous up to Late Eocene, thrusting and reverse faulting were effective due to the compressive forces of northwest-south easterly direction. Vertical block movements might have started in Post-Miocene epoch. The Munzur Mountains symbolise a passive margin of the Inner Taurid Ocean. This ocean kept opening throughout the Late Triassic-Cenomanian. The ophiolithic nappes, which came into being as a re sult of breaking into pieces of the oceanic crust of the inner Taurid belt, emplaced tectonical ly over the carbonate platform along with the new ophiolithic melange developed in the new basins over the platform and thereby the thrusted and napped structure of the Munzur Mountains occured. Even though the Munzur Mountains and the Eastern Ponti- des presently neighbour each other, they differ from each other in different rifting periods and the diverse faunal assemblage. These data indicate the existence of two separate oceanic branches, each of them being formed at different epochs. ixThese two different ri.fti.ngB oocured at the northern margin of the Gondwana Permian Carbonate Platform.
