Abstract
ABSTRACT In this work, vibrations caused by an earthquake are studied and it is aimed to satisfy the structural integrity requirements of a Nuclear Power Plant under a severe earthquake which is expected to occur only once during the operational life of the plant. A typical reactor building model whose configurations are similar to CANDU reactors is selected as the sample on which the dynamic vibrational analysis is performed. The structural parameters of the model are taken as input. The structural model used for the dynamic analysis of the reactor building is the stick model. The multipurpose finite element computer codes ANSYS, FRS, and STARDYNE are used to carry out the vibrational analysis. Dynamic response parameters, such as acceleration, velocity, displacement, force, and moment are obtained using response spectrum and floor response spectrum methods. The dynamic response parameters for floors and equipments mounted to the floors are obtained for a safe shutdown under earthquake conditions. The displacements on the most critical location of the reactor building, which is the containment, have been found to be less than 1cm even under a severe eathquake. Additional safety margins for equipments mounted to the floors of the reactor building are also determined.
