Abstract
ABSTRACT In this thesis, a synthesis procedure for macroporous and monodisperse polymeric particles carrying functional groups was developed. The oxirane and carboxyl functionalities were introduced into the polystyrene based polymeric particles by the developed procedure. In the first step of the method, the monodisperse and polstyrene based uniform particles were produced by a dispersion polymerization procedure. These particles ranging from 1.86 to 7.44 urn were utilized as the seed latices for the preparation of macroporous particles. Then, the seed particles were uniformly swollen by a low molecular weight organic agent ( i.e., dibutyl phtalate, DBP) in an aqueous emulsion medium. In the next step, DBP swollen monomer particles wre reswollen with a monomer phase comprised of styrene, divinylbenzene. a functional komonomer and an oil phase soluble initiator (i.e., benzoyl peroxide). Glycidyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid wre selected as the comonomer for the introduction of oxirane and carboxylgroups into the particles, respectively. At the last step of the developed procedure, the monomer phase were polymerized within the swollen particles dispersed and satbilized in an aqueous medium. The fina macroporous particles with differen average sizes and pore structures wre achieved by changing the seed latex type (i.e., the size and the molecular weight of seed latex), DBP/seed latex and monomer phase/seed latex ratios, functional comonomer concentration in the monomer phase and polymerization temperature. The average size and size distribution and the surface pore structures of the prodoced particles wre analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy. The functional group contents of final particles wre determined by potentiometric titration. The results indicated that, the size of final particles icreased with the increasingseed latex size, DBP/seed latex and monomer/seed latex ratios. The average pore size decreased with the decreasing molecular weight of seed latex and icreasing DBP/seed latex ratio.
