Abstract
ABSTRACT The objective of this thesis is to investigate the most appropriate analysis method for triangular contingency tables that arise as a special case of incomplete contingency tables. The first triangular contingency table analysis method is subtable separation approach, which is followed by other methods such as stochastic approach, quasi- independence, uniform association, and Sarkar method. To compare some of the methods, simulation study is performed, taken random samples of n=100,250,500,1000 observations. The upper-right triangular contingency tables of dimensions R:4,5,6,7,8 are derived. A number of 30,000 upper- right triangular contingency tables are derived using 500 replications, and quasi- independence, uniform association, and Sarkar methods are compared. It is found that the association parameter p obtained from uniform association model and the parameter t^ obtained from Sarkar method are correlated. The minimum mean squared error is found for the parameter t^ under the quasi- independence assumption. It is determined that Sarkar method is the most proper method for the analysis of triangular contingency tables instead of quasi- independence, and uniform association methods that require excessive number of iterations. Quasi-independence, and uniform association methods are implemented through a program developed using S AS 6.12 macros. The problem with the definition of structural zeros is resolved during the development of the program. Another program is developed in Borland Delphi 5.0 programming language for the implementation of Sarkar method.
