Abstract
Basic radiology units are frequently used in medical x-ray imaging. These units supplies the rated high voltage for the operation of the x-ray tube from monophase line power. A high voltage step up transformer, which mainly determines the cost of the whole system, is subjected to convert 220 V AC line voltage into 125 kV DC within the appropriate converter topology. In this thesis, the development of a general rule and a technology was aimed for the design of a resonant mode high voltage transformer fulfilling the requirements of the basic radiology unit. The leakage inductance and winding capacitance parameters of the transformer is used for achieving a resonance gain. The turn ratio, volume and thus the cost of the transformer is reduced with the use of the resonance gain resulting in a lower current rating for the driver electronics. The determination of the leakage inductance and winding capacitance from the dimensions of the transformer is studied and a general method has been developed. The accuracy of the method was verified within the data derived from the special tests which was also developed it this work. All of the design equations are adopted for an optimisation algorithm and a software for the optimisation of the transformer has been prepared. The development of the design, test and optimisation methods for a high voltage resonant transformer is capable enough to make a `lower volume` and a `lower primary current` constrained designs.
