Abstract
Abstract Recently most utilities have been trying to extend reactor cycle length in order to reduce energy production cost. One way to accomplish this is to employ burnable poison, such as chemical shim and integral fuel burnable absorbers, IFBA. Traditionally, gadolonium-oxide has been utilized together with uranium-dioxide to serve this purpose in water cooled reactors. To overcome operational problems as sociated with such burnable absorbers certain other burnable absorber designs like zirconium diboride, ZrB2, by Westinghouse have been proposed and commercially utilized. However, these burnable absorbers still causes certain operational difficul ties. In this study, one of the recently proposed burnable absorbers, namely boron nitrade - boron coated uranium dioxide pellets is taken into account and neutronics analyses of fuel assemblies and reactor cores utilizing such IFBA rods have been performed. During the course of this study, gadolina containing fuel rods are re moved and BN-B coated fuel rods are used at all fuel locations of the assembly. Results with gadolina and BN-B coating are compared to analyze the effect of new design with respect to power peaking factors and fuel burnup. As a result of this study, it is observed that spatial power distribution over reactor core becomes flat tened in case of BN-B coated fuel usage. The maximum power peaking factor at the EOC is reduced by 8.3%. Besides, the cycle burnup is increased by ~1 1.5%.
