Abstract
VI ABSTRACT Interferometry is a technique in which the radar data of active remote sensing systems, operating generally in microwave bands of electromagnetic spectrum, are analysed and used in state-of-the-art. The essential tool of interferometry is phase data images, derived from precisely measured transmission timing of the two-way journey of microwaves between the radar satellite (or aircraft) and the earth surfaces. Radar interferometry, in sense of use in seismo-tectonic aimed studies, may be taken in consideration as a new methodology of remote sensing techniques. The methodology, applied for topographic mapping at the beginning, is afterwards started to apply for detecting the displacements on earth surfaces. Co-seismic image pairs combined from two images acquired before and after the earthquake, are generally used in applications of Synthetic- Aperture Radar (SAR) Interferometry technique for seismo-tectonic aimed studies. An interferogram obtained by this way, shows the displacements produced by the earthquake. The fringes, web-like structures, on the interferograms represent the topographic changes on the surface and are also taken in consideration as iso-deformation curves. The number of the fringes occurred on an interferogram may change with the total amount of deformation caused by the seismic event. Each one of the fringes represents a displacement of an amount corresponding to a half of the wave-length of the microwave signal used by the satellite's instrument.(A/2=28 mm for ERS-1,2 SAR images) In the present study, mis methodology is used in a different manner. Instead of constructing co-seismic interferograms, we investigated the possibility to observe the crustal deformations succeeding an earthquake. In other words, we studied an active fault zone in a period where no seismic activity is recorded.vıı For this purpose, a destructive earthquake (Ms=6.8, 1992) that occurred along the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) zone, in the Erzincan basin (eastern Turkey) is selected as the study event. Two interferograms is prepared at CNES (National Agency of Space, France) for the Erzincan basin inferring from the ERS-1 SAR image pairs acquired in 1993 and 1995, an aseismic period before which the aftershocks of the 1992 earthquake also were all gone. In one of the interferograms, we detect crustal deformations revealed by the presence of several inferior levels of a single interferometric fringe. They correspond to the basin boundaries and suggest different kinematics for these lines. On the other hand, the absence of mature fringes means that the total amount of the deformations does not attain to 2.8 cm. To better understand the structural characteristics of the displacement domain as suggested by the interferometry, we need to undertook a classical investigation, with field studies complemented by the exploration of a digital elevation model (DEM) with high spatial resolution (already created for the interferometry) and SPOT and LandsatTM satellite images, observed under stereoscopy. The main results of this study are that the basin develops under the control of the NAF and another regionally important fracture zone, the Ovacık fault. Segments of this latter are suggested to reach the NAF zone, by crossing obliquely the basin. In addition, some structural lines or zones are proposed to be active within the basin, notably a small NAF-parallel pull-apart like subsidence zone whose activity may have triggered the 1992 earthquake. As the main consequence of this study, it is realized that the deformation zones inferred from interferometry have a great coherency with the structural components suggested by structural (tectonic) studies. The interferometric results, retained in a seismically quiescent period, reveal that the displacement activities do go on predominantly at the western parts of the Erzincan basin, especially on the NAF, while the eastern parts maintain its own quiescence.vııı This is likely due to the presence of a seismic gap, located at the east of the basin and established previously by fault rupture studies. The fault displacement, or slip decrease towards the gap can be interpreted as the accumulation of strain that will be released by seismic activity, in the future.
