Abstract
The widely used methods in developed countries in this regard are the application of decision-making models which are equipped with clean air plans. The input variables of these models, to work accurately and sensitively, are the map of the region, pollutant source inventory, meteorological parameters and air quality measurements. In this study, a decision-making model is developed for the region of Adapazarı, Turkey by preparing the required model inputs within this proposed study. This model is then tested by comparing the estimated pollutant concentrations with the one-year NO2 and SO2 measurements that were carried out at 14 different points within the region. A decision-making model is developed for the selected region by preparing the required BREEZE Air Suite (EPA-ISCST3) model inputs within this proposed study, which is then tested under a myriad of developed scenarios by comparing the estimated pollutant concentrations with the recorded diffusion tubes network measurements. The results of this study show that the presence of area sources, such as the existing small villages, can have a significant influence on the measured concentration of NO2 and SO2 in the whole vicinity of the study region. Accordingly, such local or long-distance transported area sources emissions act as significant sources that must be considered within any similar air quality modeling study. In the light of this study, it was found that modeling is a useful, but not enough, tool for the assessment of the ambient air quality. Especially, for decision makers, it has been seen that, a continuous verification of dispersion models with onsite measurements is necessary and must be always performed to assure a good control of the air quality of the investigated region.
