Abstract
ABSTRACT This study presents the results of proximate, petrographic, mineralogical and element analyses of lignites in the samples from the Kışlaköy and Çöllolar area in the Afşin- Elbistan lignite basin, which has the largest lignite rezerves of Turkey. The lignite seam containing abundant gastropoda shells and alternating with gyttja occur in the Ahmetcik Formation of Upper Miocene-Pliocene age. The lignite bed is currently exploited in an open-cast mine in the Kışlaköy lignite field and supply feed coal to a power plant with 4x340 MW capacity. The mineable thickness of the lignite bed in this mine is about 30 m, but in some boreholes it reaches 80 m. thickness. Twenty-three samples from the working lignite bed and sixty-three core samples of the lignites from 14 boreholes were collected and studied using proximate and petrographic analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP- MS), energy-dispersive polarisation X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDP-XRF) and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDX) techniques. The borehole samples on an air-dried basis have high ash yields (36%), and high total sulfur contents (3.9%), and low calorific values (2776 kcal/kg). The samples show that the worked lignite bed, on an as-received basis, averages high moisture contents (43%). The mineral matter of the studied samples is mainly made up of calcite, quartz, clay minerals, pyrite, feldspar, aragonite, opal-CT and gypsum. The trace element analyses, on a whole-coal dry basis, indicate that most of the borehole samples showed enrichment in specific elements, including Cr (av. 67 ppm), Mo (av. 1 1 ppm) and U (av. 13 ppm) when compared to the range of these elements for most coals in the world. The contents of Cr, Mo and U for the samples from the worked lignite bed are respectively 105 ppm, 14 ppm and 15 ppm. No Cr, Mo U-bearing minerals have been detected during these studies. The Mo and U concentrations are negatively correlated with the ash yields, and these elements are probably contained mainly within organic matter.
