Abstract
Anahtar Kelimeler: Ölçme Değerlendirme, Öğrenme This study aimed at investigating the influence of assessment method on students'learning approaches. For this purpose, the study was conducted in the second term ofacademic year 2005-2006, with 42 students at 9th, 10th and 11th grades. In this actionresearch study, the students were asked to reflect upon the way they prepared for andperceived 3 different assessment formats; multiple choice test, open ended short answerexam and oral exam. The three-part questionnaire also elicited students' responses on theirlearning strategies, their perceptions of the levels of intellectual abilities being assessed bythese 3 tasks and their preference for either one as the method for assessing their learningof the course. Results indicate distinctive patterns of preparation and perceptions according toassessment method and the nature of knowledge. Students were more likely to employsurface strategies when preparing for their multiple choice exams and deep strategies whenpreparing for their open ended and oral exams. The students who perceive Biology as asubject to be learned by memorization employ surface strategies when preparing for all the3 exams. They were also more likely to perceive the multiple choice examination asassessing lower levels of intellectual abilities and the other two as assessing higher levels ofcognitive processing. It was proposed that at the end of this study, assessing students atschools the with the open ended examinations which have emphasis on commentary can bea positive factor for leading them towards deep strategies. As for the multiple choiceexamination, it was suggested that this kind of exams should not be preferred so much sincethey are regarded as kinds of exams in which the correct answer can be determined with thechance of selection and if they are preferred, it is important that one should pay attention tothat it should include questions which are special to the examinations which have emphasison commentary.Key Words: Assessment, Learning
