Abstract
Modelling of activated sludge plants is a common application used for variouspurposes such as design, analysis and optimization. However, building conventionalactivated sludge models which have been widely used for a long time is a diffucultand cumbersome process as well as the calibration of these models. Nowadays, research studies are being conducted to improve current modelling techniques whilethe search for new methods are still continuing. In this thesis study, a large-scaledwastewater treatment plant (WWTP), namely Hurma (Antalya) WWTP, was modelledusing two different modelling techniques: conventional activated sludge model ASM2and an alternative modelling technique Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The purposeof using two different techniques is to analyze the advantages and disadvantages ofboth techniques and try to establish a basis for further studies that shall be carriedout on this topic. The plant was modelled as a whole with ASM2. Upon building thehydraulic and kinetic model, the model was calibrated using real plant operating data.As a result, intermediate model results such as growth rate, aeration basin oxygenconcentartion, sludge age and final model results such as effluent total nitrogen, totalphosphorous and chemical oxygen demand concentrations were obtained.Correlation coefficients of model and target values for total nitrogen, totalphosphorous and chemical oxygen demand concentrations were computed as 0.56,0.38 and 0.41, respectively. However, model results for ANN studies which aimed topredict the chemical oxygen demand concentrations gave a better modelperformance with a correlation coefficient of 0.70 by using the same operational dataof the plant. All applications carried out in order to achieve this result were gatheredtogether by means of a pair of source codes wherever possible for similar ANNresearch studies. Thus, a systematic structure was developed which can be used indata-based environmental engineering applications. It was observed that bothmodelling techniques have some advantages and disadvantages. ASM2 approach iscapable of modelling the activated sludge process as a whole, while developing andcalibrating the model is difficult and take a long time. On the other hand, ANNapproach is a much more easy-to-use technique. There is no need to know the innerstructure of the phenomenon that is being modelled and it provides a more flexiblemodelling environment. Still, in order to use the ANN technique, the past data recordof the system is needed and for this reason it is not possible to use this technique fordesign purposes. Keywords: Activated sludge, ASM2, kinetic model, modelling, artificial neuralnetwork.
