Abstract
Isparta ili Senirkent ilçesinde 13 Temmuz 1995 tarihinde yaşanan moloz akması felaketisonucunda can ve mal kayıpları meydana gelmiştir. As a result of the debris flow of June 13, 1995 in Senirkent (Isparta), important economic lossesand loss of lives occurred. Following the disaster, field investigations, carried out in Senirkent andits vicinity, indicated that the northern slopes of the Kapı Mountain and Barla Mountain horst werealso susceptible to similar mass movements. The main purposes of this study are to determineconditions of debris flows and the factors affecting debris flows, to produce a map showing theprobable areas for debris depositions, for an area including Besparmak Mountain for mitigating afuture disaster. Field investigations and air-photo interpretation suggest that the limestones at thenorthern slopes of the Barla Mountain belt are the potential source areas for the production ofdebris material. Due to the fact that the bedding planes of the limestones in the study area dip tosouth ? southeast, while the debris material is produced from the questas of the limestonebeddings in the northern slopes of the Barla Mountain belts, no debris occurrence at the southernslopes of the belt is expected. The debris source and deposition areas were shown on the 1/25000scaled topographic map of the study area based on field investigations and air-photointerpretations, and digitized using a geographic information system (GIS) computer package, andfinally combined with the previously prepared shaded relief map. For the assessment ofmorphological features of the study area, DEM derivatives (slope angle, slope aspect, plan andprofile curvatures, slope power index, sedimet transport capacity index) were produced. In addition, the logistic regression technique was employed to produce a debris source map. The runoutdistances and the areas to be covered by possible debris flows were calculated using the empiricalrelations previously published in literature, and a map showing the probable areas for debrisdepositions for the study area was prepared. In the last stage, rheological behaviour of debris flowswas assessed using the BING flow model and based on comparison between the results from theHerschel-Bulkley rheological behaviour model and these from other models, it is concluded that theBING model yield the shortest flow distance and shortest flow duration. Model test and siteobservations suggest that the debris material does not accumulate along the slopes steeper than200 and the model test indicate that slope angle at the time of flow vs. water content and liquid limitgraphs seem to be better indicators. It is also noted that the equation, which considers the volumeof potential debris material for determination of flow distance, is generally more suitable. İnaddition, all flow zones fall into class seven and the locations, where debris flows may reach, arealso determined.Key words: Debris flow, Mass movement, Geographical information systems, Rheology, Senirkent(Isparta).
