Abstract
Exploitation of an ore body and subsequent caving lead to the formation of a settlement on the surface profile called as subsidence. Recognition and regular monitoring of subsidences are vitally important to overcome their effects especially at the surface. In recent years, remote sensing techniques are widely used to efficiently measure and interprete subsidence effects.Remote sensing can be defined as an observation of objects remotely by using mechanical and electronical receivers. Aerial photos, aerial scanners and satellite images are basic data sources of this technique. Dissimilarities between two photographs taken in different times can be distinguished clearly since aerial photos provide information about the positions of the objects at that instant. The differences between two views can be recognized very precisely by using uptodate technology. Thus, recognition of any physical change (e.g., crack, subsidence, etc.) at the surface resulted from underground mining activities is possible. In this study, it is aimed at determining both the position and the amount of deformations (subsidence) at the surface by using remote sensing method with aerial photogrammetry. For the purpose, Çayırhan Lignite Mine, Sector B at which coal production had been completed selected for evaluation. Firstly, aerial stereo-photos of the topographic area were obtained. One group of these photos were taken in 1996 before production and the other group of photos were taken in 2001 when production at Sector B was finished. These digital photos were processed in computer to obtain digital elevation models of the area and then changes at the topography have been determined in three dimensions. At the end of these determinations, changes in vertical direction (subsidence) were found up to 4,47 m.In conclusion, it is seen that subsidence can be evaluated quickly, safely and precisely by using remote sensing. Keywords: Remote sensing, mining subsidence, surface deformations, underground mining, aerial photogrammetry, aerial photo.
