Abstract
Used as the most durable material, the stone in which the history is written and by which the past is passed to the future is due to several reasons under the threat of deterioration. In order to protect and preserve the historic fabric, it is required to primarily determine the factors which lead to deterioration and apply the proper protection methods with minimum intervention. As part of the thesis study, optical deterioration mappings required to carry out properly protection procedures that are supported by experimental operations are examined considering the chosen Public Buildings. In the section of ?General Description?, the aim and method of the study is defined, Vernacular Architecture and material utilization are described, and some information relating to deterioration reasons and protection methods is given. In the section of ?Conducted Studies?, working area is determined, the chosen buildings are introduced on ID cards, and criteria of optical deterioration mappings are explained. In the section of ?Findings and Discussion?, stone deterioration on the facades of the chosen buildings is examined through `optical mapping? method. In the section of ?Conclusion?, density of stone deterioration on the facades examined is determined. By means of the study, it is aimed to develop proper protection strategies by optical deterioration mappings which will probably be able to prepare a substructure for laboratory procedures, a further step of protection.
