Abstract
Synthetic polymers containing phosphonic acid groups have received special attention due to the wide range of applications and participation of phosphonic acid groups into the polymer can improve the properties of the resulting polymer because of the acidic groups. In this study, a series of novel functional terpolymers of the electron acceptor vinylphosphonic acid (VPA) and electron donor styrene (St) with the electron acceptor comonomers of maleic anhydride (MA), citraconic anhydride (CA) and itaconic anhydride (IA) were synthesized with certain compositions, by free radical terpolymerization. Terpolymerizations of donor and acceptor monomer systems can be described as binary copolymerization system of two different monomer charge transfer complexes. In order to investigate polymerization reactions, complex formations were investigated for donor-acceptor monomer systems of St...VPA, MA...St, CA...St, IA...St pairs by 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy and constants of the copolymerization of monomer charge transfer complexes were determined by 1H NMR analysis. Comparative analysis of the copolymerization of monomer charge transfer complexes were reported for all studied systems. The values of copolymerization constants and the reactivity of the monomers, verify the fact that monomer pairs have a tendency to random copolymerization.Monomer unit compositions, characterizations and structure-property relationships of a series of Poly(MA-co-St-co-VPA)s, Poly(CA-co-St-co-VPA)s and Poly(IA-co-St-co-VPA)s were investigated with different techniques. Molecular weights and polydispersities of terpolymers were determined by GPC, structural identifications were explained by FTIR, Raman, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, DEPT135, 31P NMR analysis, thermal stabilities and glass transition temperatures were investigated by TGA, DTA and DSC, dynamic mechanical properties were examined by DMA, crystallinity properties were identified by XRD, viscosity and polyelectrolyte behaviors were studied by viscometry and acid numbers were determined by known titration method.
