Abstract
In this study, Al2024 / B4C and Al2024 / SiC nano composites and Al2024 / B4C-SiC hybrid nano composites were produced using powder metallurgy production method. The average particle size of the Al2024 powder used as the matrix material was 50 μm, and the B4C having a mean particle size of 45-55 nm and the SiC particles having a 40 nm particle size were reinforced by milling. Milling was carried out for 8 hours using 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 as reinforcement ratios. After milling, it was observed that B4C, SiC and B4C-SiC hybrid particles were homogeneously dispersed in the particle size and microstructural investigations of the powders. Milling powders were pressed by hot pressing method to produce nano composites and hybrid nano composites. Microstructure properties (SEM and XRD analysis), mechanical properties (bending, tensile and hardness tests) and corrosion properties of the produced nanocomposites were determined. In the obtained test results, the best bending and tensile tests were obtained from 2% reinforced composites in all Al2024 / B4C, Al2024 / SiC and Al2024 / B4C-SiC nanocomposites. Al2Cu and Al4C3 were found to be important factors affecting the bending and tensile strengths of the interphase amounts. Brinell hardness values increased with increasing reinforcement ratio. Corrosion rates of the composites increased with increasing reinforcement ratio, but after 1.5% reinforcement, there was a continuous decrease in corrosion rate and the lowest corrosion rate was obtained at 5% reinforcement.
