Abstract
Intertextuality is based on the idea that texts exist with various relations with their precedents and concerned with the discovery and interpretation of the network of relations between prior and later texts. Intertextuality is fundamentally used in literary context; however, it can also be helpful for architectural production. Built on the basic assumptions that architecture is an intertextual production incorporating intertextual methods and architectural structures can be analyzed through an intertextual reading, this study aims to investigate and reveal the intertextuality of architectural production by using intertextual methods. Accordingly, the study discusses the relations between intertextuality and architecture, thereby attempting to be a resource for intertextual architectural readings. Thus, this study is based on the re-reading of the restored historical buildings, which are unquestionably related to their precedents and antecedents, through intertextual methods. The first part of the study is the General Overview which includes the importance of the study, the identification of the research problem, the purpose and scope of the study, and the research approach and method. The chapter Previous Work 1 discusses the definition, interpretation and scope of intertextuality and intertextual methods, and the relations between intertextuality and architecture. The chapter Previous Work 2 involves detailed information of the sample building and provides a conceptual and visual guide that includes the conceptual equivalents of intertextual methods to the discipline of architecture. In the chapter Results and Discussion, prior and later relations associated with intertextual methods are tested on the sample building. The chapter Conclusion and Suggestions involves arguments supporting the basic assumptions that architecture is an intertextual production incorporating intertextual methods and architectural production can be read through intertextual methods. The chapter finally offers a number of suggestions for the intertextual context in architecture.
