Abstract
The main aim of this study is to reveal factors that can affect the emotional memory performance and to indicate how this performance is being affected in Alzheimer's Type Dementia (ATD), a disorder characterized with aging and immense memory loss. With respect to this purpose, two experimental studies are designed. In the Experiment I, emotional valence (pleasant, neutral and unpleasant) of pictures and words are manipulated in order to examine the results of this manipulation on emotional performance indexed by measurements such as encoding, free recall, recognition, and reaction times. The effect of emotional contexts produced by words for pictures and vice versa on encoding and memory measurements are also tested. In the Experiment II, how subliminal (SB) and supraliminal (SP) presentations and emotional valence of the context affect implicit and explicit memories are also studied.Experiment I consists of 90 participants in three groups as young (30), healthy elder (30), and ATD (30) groups. On the other hand, Experiment II has 30 young participants at the each of SB and SP conditions. In Experiment I, Emotional Memory Battery consist of 63 pictures (pleasant, neutral and unpleasant) chosen from International Affective Picture System (IAPS) and 63 adjective words (pleasant, neutral and unpleasant) are used. In Experiment II, 24 of pictures (8 pleasant, 8 neutral and 8 unpleasant) are selected in Experiment I. For this part of the study 24 different nouns (all concrete) are used. For Experiment I, all dependent variable measurements were analysed with 3(Group: Young, healthy elder and ATD) x 3(Emotional Valence of Picture: Pleasant, neutral and unpleasant) x 3(Emotional Valence of Word: Pleasant, neutral and unpleasant) mixed ANOVA design repeated at last two factors. For Experiment II, all dependent variable measurements were analysed with 2(Presentation Type: Subliminal and Supraliminal) x 3(Emotional Valence: Pleasant, neutral and unpleasant) mixed ANOVA design repeated at last factor. Bonferroni correction was applied in post hoc comparisons. Data was collected with 15 inch laptop computer.Analyses indicate that memory enhancement effect was there for all three groups including ATD. Generally, context that was produced by negative stimuli affected emotional memory performance more and in a better way than other context types such as positive and neutral ones. In addition, participants remembrance scores were better if both context and stimulus were congruent than incongruent. Also, reaction times of participants to pleasant stimuli were quick but unpleasant ones were slow. Pictures had superior remembrance scores than words. In Experiment II, Word Stem Completion Task scores are higher in SP condition than SB condition. At both conditions, participants completed more words if the words had been previously showed with negative pictures than had been showed with pozitive or neutral pictures. Therefore, priming effect was higher for words presented with negative pictures than other word-picture combinations. Results provide supports to the fact that levels of processing theory can explain findings in implicit tasks such as word stem completion task. Results of the study are discussed with respect to Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, emotional memory enhancement effect and levels of processing theory.
