Abstract
In this thesis, MgB2 bulk, wire and tape samples have been fabricated by using the various carbon-containing compounds as an additive material. The effects of these additives on the superconducting properties of MgB2 were investigated. The phase formation of the manufactured samples was examined by means of x-ray diffraction. The microstructural characteristics of these samples were analysed by using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The thermal behaviors of the non-sintered powder samples were also studied their characteristics via thermal analysis techniques including Thermogravimetry and Differential Scanning Calorimetry simultaneously. The critical temperatures of pure and doped samples were determined by ac susceptibility and resisitivity measurements. The magnetic properties of the prepared samples were examined by magnetization measurements and the magnetic critical current density was calculated from these measurements. The x- ray diffraction patterns clearly reveal the presence of the hexagonal crystal structure of MgB2 with a small amount of magnesium and magnesium oxide impurity for all samples. When the scanning electron microscopy images of the samples were analysed, it is observed that the samples has a granular structure and homogeneous mixture. When the energy dispersive x- ray spectra of the samples were examined, it is observed that magnesium, boron, carbon and oxygen peaks have been occured at our sample structure. It is clear from thermal curves of our samples that there exists one endothermic and two exothermic peaks. When the ac susceptibility and resistivity measurement results were analysed, it is found that the critical temperature was depressed with carbon doped. When the magnetization curves of all the samples were analysed, it is seen to have typical diamagnetic property of a superconductor. The magnetic critical current densities of all the samples at various temperatures were calculated from the hysteresis loops by using Bean's critical state model. Improvements in the critical current density have been observed on carbon doping in the samples.
