Abstract
Clean, environmental friendly, storable and transferrable hydrogen can be a good alternative to fossil fuels due to its mentioned properties. Hydrogen is mostly existed in compounds though it is abundant in nature. It can't be utilized as fuel in this form. Hydrogen can be generated through electrolysis of water which is abundant in nature too. Utilization of electrolysis in hydrogen generation from water is an effective method for a wide range of capacities from small scales to large scales. In this work, mathematical modeling and numerical analysis of a system dealing with re-conversion of the hydrogen generated via water electrolysis using electrical energy obtained from photovoltaics to energy by means of a fuel cell. The electrical energy obtained via PV panels is used in electrolysis of water. The hydrogen generated by the electrolyzer is stored and re-converted in to electrical energy through a hydrogen fuel cell in case of a necessity. Monthly averages of the past years meteorological data of Konya was grounded on in the calculations. Problem was solved in two phases according to the formed mathematical model by the help of MATLAB coding language and its auxiliary software SIMULINK. Electrolysis of water with the energy coming from PV solar panels is the first phase. At the second phase in the other hand, converting obtained hydrogen into energy in PEM fuel cell was modeled and computationally solved. Attained results were compared to the results of some previous experimental studies. Acquired results of the present study are in accordance with the results obtained in similar work in respect of both hydrogen generation via the electrolysis method and fuel cell. The energy intensity attained from the fuel cell is closely related to the hydrogen input amount, quality of cell membrane and cell pressure. Temperature was seen as an important parameter for generated hydrogen amount by means of the electrolyzer.
