| dc.description.abstract | SUMMARY STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF CORK BASED SEALINGS MATERIALS Keywords: Cork, additives, rubber, gasket sheets, manufacturing, characterisation. Gasket is a material or combination of materials used to create and maintain static seal between two stationary or separable members of mechanical joint. Gasket is necessary and often vital to satisfactory functioning of a wide range of industrial equipment. Gaskets are made of soft material, compared to flange mating surface. Cork is used with some additives in manufacturing gasket sheets. Additives are rubbers, proteins and phenol-formaldehyde. However, the most used additives in cork based gaskets is rubber. Cork based sealing materials are widely used in industries such as automotive, petroleum and chemical industry, antifreeze medium, bacterium medium and every medium working in oil. In this study, cork based gasket materials using in automotive industry and gasket industry were investigated. Gasket manufacturers, production methods, trading states and having problems were analyzed and proposed solutions. Various standard tests were applied for characterisation of cork based gasket sheets produced by gasket companies in Turkey. Experimental results were compared with technical values of imported gasket sheets and the norm TS 2647 of Turkish Standard Institute (TSE). XIAs a result, technical values of national manufactured gasket lower than imported gasket's. All values satisfy TSE norm. There is only a few gasket manufacturer company having TSE quality assurance certificate.
