Abstract
Microstrip filters play a very important role in RF and microwave engineering. It is the most basic need to filter certain frequencies in receiver and transmitter systems. In this thesis, working mechanisms of microstrip filters that are widely used in practice were investigated; also, various design methods and ways of improving filter performance were researched. The study includes theoretical examination, design, production, and characteristic analysis. A 5th-order filter circuit with a 1.2 GHz cutoff frequency is designed with lumped elements such as capacitor, inductor, and resistor and Butterworth low pass microstrip filter is proposed as an equivalent filter. To obtain another equivalent filter a square split-ring resonator and the dumbbell-shaped defected ground structures are applied. Finally, a photonic bandgap filter is designed as a fourth model and each of these four different filters are simulated by the CST simulation software program and calculated the scattering (S) parameters. With the help of data obtained from the S parameters graph, filter performances were compared in terms of insertion loss, attenuation level, bandwidth, and physical size. After that, Butterworth and square split ring resonator microstrip filters were produced by a photolithography method and experimental results and simulation results were compared. It was observed that the simulation results were compatible with the measurement results and the proposed square split-ring resonator and photonic bandgap structures improved Butterworth filter performance.
