Abstract
Anahtar Kelimeler: Yeme bozukluğu, benlik saygısı, tıp öğrencileri Aim: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between eating attitudes self-esteemand sociodemographic characteristics of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) School ofMedicine students.Material and Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was applied in class1st, 3rd and 6th students of OMU School of Medicine. 475 medical studentsparticipated in the study. The questionnaire, prepared by searching the literature, consists of three parts. The first section contains sociodemographic information. On thesecond part there is the Eating Attitude Test (EAT). The third part is the Rosenberg SelfRespect Scale (RSES). Obtained data were processed using SPSS 20. The data arepresented in percentage, number, average and standard deviation. Chi-square test wasused to compare categorical data and t-test was used for numerical variables inindependent variables. Statistical significance was considered at p <0.05.Results: 440 of the 475 questionnaires participating in the study were correctly filledand included in the evaluation. The median age of the medical students was 21,03 ±2,36 years and 53,4% (n: 235) of the students were female and 46,6% (n: 205) of thestudents were male. Among female students, who scored over 30 points on EAT, was14.5%, among male students it found 9.8%. There was no statistically significantdifference between sexes (X²: 2,25; p: 0,133). No significant relationship was foundbetween the students smoking-alcohol habits, the income level of the family, chronicdisease presence, place of residence, exercise, parents' weight status, body mass index, time spent on computer-television and the students who scored over 30 points on EAT(p> 0.05). A statistically significant relationship was found between the dietary stateand EAT score of 30 and above (X2:9,087; p: 0,003). Self-esteem found low 14.5% (n:34) of female students and 11.7% (n: 24) of male students. There was no statisticallysignificant relationship between genders (p: 0,393). Statistically significant correlationwas found between YTT and RSES (p: 0,036).Conclusion: Our study shows parallelism with other studies and shows that eatingdisorders are increasing as represented in the literature. Therefore, it is very important todetermine the risk of eating disorders, determine the frequency and determine additionalfactors with new studies for protection young people against eating disorders.
