On The Halicarnassus Peninsula according to the tradition of settlement, twodifferent types of city models have been observed. Whereas Halicarnassus andMyndus are the two cities which had been founded according to ancient Greektradition, Lelegian cities, called as Old Myndus, Side, Pedasa, Telmessus, Termera,Uranium and Madnasa, had been established in terms of local custom. The city wall plans in these two types of settlement models differ from eachother in regard to the characteristics of the settlements. Halicarnassus and Mynduswere located by the sea shore. Therefore, the area they cover and the area surroundedby the walls are much more larger. Lelegian cities founded according to the localcustom were located on high mountains and hills which were suitable for defense, sothe fortifications surround only the summit of the hill. Consequently, the area theycover is inevitably much more smaller than the cities founded according to ancientGreek tradition. The city walls established according to ancient Greek tradition display thefeatures of fourth century B.C. The walls which were mentioned in Vitruvius? anderected according to the technique called as ?emplekton? are homogeneous. Thefortifications in Lelegian cities dated as seventh, sixth-fifth century B.C. were builtby using dry rubble masonry and they exhibit an irregular masonry work. Some Lelegian cities which were evacuated as a result of Mausolus?synoikismos politics had icluded watch towers built according to ashlar style on theirhilltops. However, these watch towers constructed in ashlar style did not match withthe original plan of the cities. The masonry of the towers were completely differentfrom Lelegian masonry. During this period Uranium was replanned entirely, andhaving changed its city characteristics it became a military base.en_US
