Abstract
This study investigates the simulation of flow characteristics such as flow rate, water surfaces profile, and pressures distribution over ogee type spillway surface. Distribution of vertical velocity, pressure and shear stress in seven points on the surface of the spillway is simulated by using the FLOW-3D software based physical models obtained from the literature. The pressure and water surcharge over the spillway was calculated for two models of spillway with eight different flow rates for each model. Since the actual flow is turbulent in the physical model, the `?−?` turbulence model was chosen in the numerical modeling. The results from numerical model containing pressure and water surcharge were compared with the laboratory model results. A good agreement was achieved between the numerical results and the experimental data. The results showed that as the discharge increases the pressure distribution is reduced and vice versa. In addition, the first model analysis showed two regions of negative pressure throughout the domain; the first one located at the ogee curve while the second at the end of the sloping straight line somewhere after ogee curve. Also, the slope of the horizontal surface of spillway structure after the ogee crest was observed to influence on the pressure distribution by avoiding the cavitation's problems to take place. The Flow-3D simulation results were also compared with those of ANSYS tool based on the corresponding physical model. Overall, the numerical simulations of both tools are close to the physical model data with FLOW-3D simulations being slightly better than ANSYS.
