An Experiment with pair work technique in foreign language learning in large classes at Atatürk High School in Gaziantep

Abstract

Dr. Yener GÜLMEZ Eylül, 1993, 68 sayfa Bu çalışma, Gaziantep Atatürk Lisesinde, kalabalık sınıflarda yabana dil öğreniminde ikili çalışmanın etkili olup, olmadığını araştırmak amacı ile yapılmıştır. Lise öğrencileri bu çalışmanın denekleridir. Seksen öğrenci 40 ar kişilik iki grup oluşturmuşlardır; Deney ve Kontrol Grubu. Kalabalık sınıflarda, yabana dil öğreniminde, ikili çalışmanın etkisini değerlendirmek için deneklere ön test ve son test uygulanmıştır. Deney her grup için haftada üç saat olmak üzere yedi hafta boyunca devam etmiştir. Her iki gruba da yönler ve yer ile ilgili ilgeçler öğretilmiştir, öğretime başlamadan önce iki gruba ön test verilmiştir. İşlemden sonra aynı test her iki gruba da uygulanmıştır. Notlar 1 den 100'e kadar olup, sonuçlar Gay'm 't-test' formülü kullanılarak analiz edilmiş ve bunun sonucunda da p(0.05 için istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olup, olmadığı test edilmiştir. Öğrenim sonunda, her öğrenci için ön test ve son test arasında dikkate değer bir artış gözlenmiştir, ön test sonuçlan, öğretimden önce iki grubun başarısı arasında istatistiksel olarak bir anlam olmadığım göstermiştir. Bu çalışmanın sonucunda, kalabalık sınıflarda ikili çalışan öğrencilerin başarı notları ile yalnız çalışan öğrencilerin basan notları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir sonuç elde edilmemiştir. ABSTRACT AN EXPERIMENT WITH PAIR WORK TECHNIQUE IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING IN LARGE CLASSES AT ATATÜRK HIGH SCHOOL IN GAZÎANTEP (DÜNDAR) BA?ÇECİ, Birsen M.A. in English Language Teaching Supervisor : Assoc. Prof. Yener GÜLMEZ September, 1993, 68 pages This study aims at investigating the effect of Pair work Technique in large foreign language learning classes at Atatürk High School in Gaziantep, Turkey. The High School students were the subjects of the study. Eighty students were divided into two groups; the Experimental (40 students) and the Control (40 students). A pretest and a posttest were administered to evaluate the effect of pair work on foreign language learning in large classes. The experiment was conducted for 3 hours a week for seven weeks. The subjects were taught prepositions related to directions and places. The pretest was administered prior to the instruction for both Experimental and Control groups. The posttest followed the instruction and treatments for both groups. The scores (as percentage) from these tests were analyzed using Gay's t-test for independent samples and the statistical significance was adapted when p(0.05. A marked increase was observed between the pretest and the posttest scores of each student regardless of treatments. The results of pretest scores indicated that there was no significant difference between the experimental and the control groups prior to the instruction. The result of this study indicated that there was no significant difference between the achievement scores of the students who work in pairs and that of the students who work individually in large classes.
