Abstract
Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) is the oldest electric machine. Many investigations on improving performance of SR motors have been performed so far. Its seen from the related literature that the first method used for performance improvement is the design of motor control circuit while the second method is the design of motor magnetic circuit have been taken into account. This study investigates the SR motor for two different winding structures. The first one is classical SR (Short pitched) and the second one is mutually coupled SR (fully pitched) motor. For both winding structures the geometric dimensions of the motor have been changed, and the effects of these parameters on the motor characteristics have been determined. In this regard, for both motors the air-gap and stator-rotor pole arcs, which are important design parameters, have been varied in definite intervals. Then the developed models have been analysed using the Finite Element Method (FEM).According to the resulting of the static analyses it has been found that the motor will reach the magnetic saturation earlier when the air gap is varied. Its seen that , for the properly determined stator-rotor pole arcs, the amplitude of torque peaks can be decreased using the analyses results the torque ripples ratios in both motors have been determined, and suggestions for eliminating them have been presented. It has been found that the methods used for decreasing torque ripple in classical SR motors can also be used in Mutually Coupled SR motors.
