Abstract
In this study five front brake rotors of the car, 2001 model Toyota Corolla, has been used. Four of these has been coated with metallic (Metco 19E and 18C), sermet and ceramics by using various coating methods. Two rotors have been coated respectively with Metco 18C and Metco 19E metallic powder at 1 mm thickness using flame spray and melting method. After the other two rotors were coated with NiCr layer; by using plasma spray method, the first one has been coated with Al2O3-TiO2 and the second one has been coated with Cr3C2-NiC using HVOF method. Samples taken from all coatings made in this study and OEM rotor have been subjected to metallographic investigation. Furthermore, OEM discs and coated discs have been subjected to J2522 global brake effectiveness test of SAE with full-scale inertia dynamometer in Link Testing Laboratory (Detroit, USA). In all tests; parameters as braking number, cycle time, brake speed, release speed, stop time, deceleration, braking torque, pad actuator pressure, coefficient of friction, rotor temperature, and inpad/outpad temperature have been saved for 276 brakings. While total test time of each disc was 41400 s, averagely 1770 seconds of this time was determined as effective braking time. In addition to these parameters, in some test sections, coning, brake torque variation and disc thickness variation were also measured. Furthermore, before and after tests, abrasion rate of rotors and pads were measured in ?mm? and ?g?. Additionally, all rotors were subjected to cosmetic corrosion test according to SAE J2334 test standards. In all tests; coated rotors showed higher performance than OEM rotor in respect of corrosion resistance and coefficient of friction (except of ceramics disc).
