Abstract
Visual tracking of objects in video sequences is an important topic in computer vision applications, including visual surveillance, video indexing, vehicle navigation, human-computer interaction. Various visual tracking approaches have been proposed to handle changes in appearance of objects caused by pose variation, illumination changes, occlusions and noise etc.. Conventionally, a single feature descriptor such as color histogram or gradient based histogram has been used to represent the target for tracking purposes. Instead of using a single feature descriptor, multi-feature descriptors have also been used for target representation in the literature. These approaches can improve the target tracking performance and achieve robustness at the expense of computational load. The region covariance desciptor, which includes statistical and spatial features as well as correlation between features, has been widely used for target representation in visual tracking. In this thesis, a new dissimilarity criterion has been proposed to compare region covariance descriptors. It is aimed that the performance of the covariance descriptor based object tracking approach increases using the proposed original method. In this method, the first-order statistics of the features have been integrated into the distance metric to obtain a better tracking performance with respect to standard covarince tracking. In this thesis, it has been proposed as a novel approach to increase performance of visual tracking in relatively complex situations such as occlusion, similar objects within the scene, appearance changes etc. The proposed method is based on Gaussian weighting and Kalman Filtering approaches. In addition, a new occlusion detection stage, which depends on the distance metric, is integrated to the proposed method. In this thesis, region covariance descriptor based target tracking with low computatinal load has also been proposed. The fundamentals of the proposed method is to select fewer pixels within the target region to construct the region covariance descriptor.
