Abstract
The problem of studying backward wave mode characteristics is equivalent to understanding properties of the propagation constant of guiding structure. In this thesis, in a lossless and closed rectangular waveguide filled with heterogeneous and anisotropic media which permit coupling between transverse and longitudinal field components, backward wave propagation problem has been investigated. Due to the presence of a large work area in the literature and the similarity in structure that we want to examine, a lossless and closed rectangular waveguide partially filled with a slab of transversely magnetized ferrite was taken up. Maxwell's equations consisting of partial differential equation are transformed into an ordinary differential equation system which is also called transmission line equations by transmission line equivalence method. As a result of some algebraic operations, from these equation system a quadratic eigenvalue problem is obtained whose eigenvalue corresponds to the propagation constant. A novel expression has been derived analytically for the group velocity by this eigenvalue problem. By the expression of the group velocity, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of backward waves in a frequency interval were determined. The determinant of the coefficient matrix of the quadratic eigenvalue problem is a monic polynomial of the propagation constant whose coefficients are rational functions of the complex frequency. If the polynomial is set equal to zero and is multiplied by the common denominator of the coefficients, an algebraic equation is obtained. In this thesis, using algebraic function theory, the roots of the algebraic equation (i.e. propagation constant) are expressed by means of series expansions in the neighborhood of the singular points. These series expansions not only yield accurate numeric values for the propagation constant, but also bring to a functional insight for the propagation constant behavior. The implementation of algebraic function theory to a system which permit coupling between transverse and longitudinal fields is another major contribution of this thesis.
