Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of an instruction augmented with materials based on the unit of `Propagation of Light and Sound`, specifically in the context of the propagation of sound, and supported by related experiments in accordance with those materials on students' academic achievement and their motivation toward science. The study adopted pretest, posttest control group quasi-experimental design as methodological approach. Participants were a total of 175 5th grade students (intervention group 89; control group 86, respectively) enrolled in three middle schools located in Kocaeli Province. Participants in the intervention group were engaged with experiments and related materials during the period of instruction while those in the control group were lectured as offered in the current science program. Data were collected through two scales called FBABT and ÖFÖYM. The data were analysed by SPSS 21. Data analysis was operated by using independent samples t-test, One-Way and Two-Way Anova scores. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the groups on behalf of intervention group in terms of their academic achievement. In addition, the difference between the groups was also significant among aforementioned schools. The analysis of ÖFÖYM showed that although there was no statistical difference between the groups, motivation level of those in the intervention group was quantitatively higher. Moreover, there was a statistically significant difference only on behalf of the group called `Experiment 2` in School A while not in the other groups. Results concluded that the materials and related experiments improved students' academic achievement. However, it was concluded that the length of the intervention was found limited to enhance students' motivation toward science.Key Words: Academic Achievement, Material, Motivation, Propagation of Sound, Science Education.
