Abstract
Today, studies about traffic and driver safety have become more important with the developing technology. The systems that support the drivers by warning them about their faults while driving are called Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Within the scope of this thesis study, lane detection and departure warning systems have been carried out which are important part of advanced driver assistance systems. The focus of the thesis is to develop novel methods that have real-time working capacity on embedded platforms.Success of the lane departure warning systems is directly related to lane marking detection performance. For this reason, studies on lane marking detection have been carried out and 5 different methods have been proposed in this study which can work in real time. The developed systems have been successfully implemented in real time on embedded platforms with different ARM architectures.Experimental results show that the methods proposed in the thesis can detect the lane markings in different conditions with higher accuracy than the existing methods without sacrificing real time processing performance. The developed real-time smartphone application demonstrates consumer-grade device performance of the lane detection method proposed in this thesis. In addition, a real-time lane departure warning system suitable for automotive standards has been developed to meet real-life conditions.
