Abstract
In this study; first of all, the theoretical examination of blackbody radiation, which is the physical subject of passive radiation and passive imaging is done. It is aimed to realize Passive MilliMeter Wave Imaging System (PMMWIS) which can help other imaging systems (infrared and optical systems) which cannot work sufficiently in foggy and cloudy environments. Then, the components of a PMMWIS operating at a frequency of 96 GHz (3 millimeters of wavelength) were combined. Behind; the receiver is located at the optimum position where the passive receiver operating at a frequency of 96 GHz gives the maximum signal. With the help of this system, measurements were carried out at different times and at different locations at various resolutions. As a result of these measurements; the main purpose of this study is to obtain the PMMWIS image of the objects in the region between the azimuth (between 120 degree and 240 degree) and the elevation (between 75 degree and -15 degree) axes of the system. Various image processing programs have been used to improve the images. The resolution of the images obtained with the system is up to 1190×890 pixels where their resolutions are higher than HD (1280×720 pixels). This resolution is the highest resolution compared to the other samples in the world within our knowledge. Because our system is a radiometric module; sky temperature profile were additionally obtained by scanning across the elevation axis in Turkey, Kocaeli, the town of Izmit. Besides all these studies; the receiver working at a frequency of 96 GHz has been purchased abroad, a domestic radiometric receiver is desired to design and realize by ourselves. The design of the parts of this domestic radiometric receiver, which can operate at 35 GHz , takes its place as a second objective in the thesis. At first, the low noise amplifier (LNA), which is the most important part of the receiver, was designed and realized. LNA design and implementation was carried out for the first time in this frequency to be used for PMMWIS in Turkey. Moreover; two different millimeter wave antennas (Vivaldi fed and antipodal Vivaldi antennas) have been designed to work with this receiver at a frequency of 35 GHz. The concepts of millimeter wave and radiometer were explained in detail in the literature researches for the thesis, and Radio Frequency (RF) circuit design was mentioned. Some descriptions of the remote sensing are given and parts of the PMMWIS are also described. Additionally; while all of these thesis studies are going on, some supports have been given for establishment of a 3 meter anechoic chamber and MILTECH (Millimeter Wave Electromagnetic and Security Technologies) Laboratory which is a new facility for Kocaeli University (KOU) within the scope of two projects supported by KOU under the leading of my supervisor.
