Osmanlının son yüzyılda İzmir`deki Rum Tebaa (1823-1923)

Abstract

Osmanlının son yüzyılında İzmir'de yaşayan Rumların, demografik, ekonomik, sosyal ve hukuki durumlarının değerlendirilmesi araştırmamızın amacını oluşturmaktadır. Amacımız, yüzyıllık İzmir tarihini yazmak değil; Rumları, diğer topluluklarla birlikte her açıdan değerlendirmek ve dönemin bu anlamda kavranmasına katkıda bulunmaktır. Bu amaca yönelik izleyeceğimiz strateji; Rumların, İzmir'e yerleşme tarihlerini ve nedenlerini belirleyip, araştıracağımız yüzyıl öncesindeki demografik yapıyı ve genel anlamda, ekonomik ve sosyal durumu tespit etmek, araştırma sürecinin daha iyi anlaşılacağı düşüncesiyle, uygun görülmüştür. Tanzimat dönemiyle birlikte gelinen nokta, araştırmamızın çıkış noktası olduğu için bu dönemden başlayarak, Rumların akla gelebilecek her açıdan, zamanın, koşulların ve kaynakların el verdiği ölçüde değerlendirilmesi, izlenecek yol olmuştur. Rumları, İzmir'de yaşayan diğer topluluklardan tamamiyle soyutlayarak incelemek imkansız olduğu gibi, bir şeylerin eksik kalmasına da neden olacağı düşüncesiyle, zaman zaman genelden özele inerek, kıyaslamalarla, etkileyen ve etkilenen taraf olarak, zaman zaman da sadece özel yaşamlanyla, Rumları değerlendirmek yerinde bir karar olmuştur. Çalışmamız süresince elde ettiğimiz bulgularla vardığımız en önemli sonuç, Rumların söz konusu olan dönemde ekonomik, sosyal ve hukuki durumlarıyla11 İzmir'in biçimlenmesindeki işlevleri oldu. Bu işlevler bazen söz sahipliği derecesinde, bazen mütevazı bir görüntüde, bazen de sıradan bir kimlikteydi. Ama en önemlisi İzmir'e sinmiş, oturmuş ve İzmir'le yoğrulmuş bir topluluğun öy küsüydü. Bu nedenle, bu çalışmada gördüğümüz ve belirlediğimiz sonuçlar ışığında diyebiliriz ki, İzmir'in her anlamda bugününü anlamak ve yorumlamak için araştırma konusu olarak seçtiğimiz zaman diliminin iyi anlaşılması ve incelenmesi gerekmektedir.

The aim of this study is to evaluate demografic, economic, social and legal rights of Rum people who lived at the last century of the Ottoman Empire. The main goal is not only to make a research about Izmir's a long-century history; to evalute and to assist in comprehension with other social components of Rum people who lived in this period. The following strategy towards to the aim is; to make the study more clearly it has been approved that to designate the process of settlement of Rum people to Izmir and the reasons of this migration and then to determine the demographic structure, in general meaning, the economic and social structure at the previous century. The starting point and the tracking way of this study is the period in the Ottaman State which the political reforms were made and, with the possibilities of the conditions and the sources, to evaluate Rum people in every instance. It has been a good decision not to cause something missing, to consider Rum people with the other societies who live in Izmir, sometime from general to personal, sometime with the comparisons and the reciprocal influences, and sometime with only their own private lives. The most important result with the findings throughout the study is the functions of Rum people in this period giving shape to Izmir with their economic, social and law structers. These funtions were sometime having so right to comment on, sometime so modest and sometime in an ordinary identity. Because of this, in the light of the result of this study, it can be said that to understand and to interpret of present Izmir in every meaning, this period of time which was choosen for this study topic must be understood and be examined carefully.
