Secularity, positivist secularism and Turkey

Abstract

ÖZET Bu çalışma, Türk sekulariaminin fikri alanın bir kısmını incelemektedir. Çalışmanın yazarına göre, 19.yüzyıl positivizmi Türk sekularizrninin fikri boyutunun önemli bir kısmım biçimlendirmiştir. Bu çalışma, laikliği (secularity) kavramsallaştırmaya çalışmıştır. Ayrıca, İslam ve laiklik, ve Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun klasik dönemindeki laik (secular) boyut da tartışılmıştır. Bu çalışma, laikliği, modernleşme meselesi içinde düşünmektedir. IV

ABSTRACT The present study is an attempt to investigate an important aspect of Turkish secularism in the intellectual realm. According to the author of this study, positivism of the nineteenth century shaped one aspect of the intellectual content of Turkish secularism. In this study, it is also intended to conceptualize secularity and to define its dimensions. Furthermore, the issues of Islam and secularity, and secular dimensions in the Ottoman classical age were discussed. According to the author, Turkish positivist secularism is related with both of these issues. While doing so, this study attempted to consider Turkish secularism in the context of modernization problem. Ill
