Abstract
- 94 - SUMMARY PERFORMANCE OF SHORT-CHAIN ALKYL AROMATIC SULPHONATES IN LIGHT DUTY FOAMING DETERGENTS Short-chain alkyl aromatic sulphonates were prepared by sulphonation of petroleum fractions boiling in the range of 145 - 240° C. To increase the surface activity this petroleum fraction was separated into 145 - 185° C and 185 - 240° C cuts through distillation prior to sulphonation. Investigation of surface and interfacial properties of the 185 - 240° C cut sulphanates showed excellent foam stability and resistance to water hardness with other properties being in an acceptable range. These properties- indicated that these sulphonates could be used in light duty foaming detergents. Performance tests conducted by manual disk washing according to generally accepted standards showed that sulphonates of 185 - 240 C cut could be used as much as 15 % in liquid and 10 '/. in cream light duty foaming detergents.
