Abstract
İzmir Körfezi uzun yıllar boyunca Akdeniz'in en kirli körfezlerin birisi olmuştur. Izmir Bay has been one of most polluted bays of Mediterranean for a long time. After ?Big Channel Project? completed in 2000, sewage flow to the bay has been avoided. Accordingly, influences of the creeks which are the only source of water transportation to the inner bay were investigated in this current study. Therefore in the research comprehension, monthly samplings of creek and sea water were performed for each. Basic oceanographical variables and nutrients were measured. Besides, phytoplankton community was arrayed into size fractions to assess the contribution of each size fractions to biomass and pigment concentrations. Analyses were showed that the creek waters have very high nutrient concentrations. Although decrement of nutrient concentrations of the sea as compared to past years was detected, results of the analyses showed that the phytoplankton biomass was increased. Minimum and maximum values of nutrient concentrations and chlorophyll-a were found to be 0,23-22,28 ?M for ammonium; 1,54-11,77 ?M for nitrate; 0,00-3,51 ?M for nitrite; 1,99-41,94 ?M for silicate; 0,00-5,96 ?M for phosphate; 5,03-30,26 ?g/L for chlorophyll-a. This case shows that phytoplankton is also responsible for decrement of nutrient values. Nanoplanktons were found to be dominant phytoplankton group in the inner bay. An increment of pikoplankton was detected towards the outside of the bay. Generally it was found that pikoplankton biomass was increased from surface to deep water of the sea. Consequently, controlling these high nutrient concentrations might contribute the cleaning process of Izmir Bay.
