Abstract
Water is the essential life sources. The amount of fresh water on earth is limited. Increasing amounts of fresh water will be required in the future as a result of the rise in population rates and enhanced living standards. Using the product water of seawater and geothermal water by reverse osmosis method as drinking and irrigation water has been popular as an alternative water sources. In order to use water produced by reverse osmosis system as drinking and irrigation water, it should be suitable according to drinking and irrigation water criteria (which is determined by World Health Organization-WHO, Turkish Standards Institute-TSE and Environmental Protection Agency-EPA).In this study, quality of water produced from SWRO system established by Prof.Dr. Nalan Kabay?s research group at the laboratories of Faculty of Fisheries of Ege University at Urla and quality of water produced from BWRO system at geothermal plant of Izmir Geothermal Co were investigated using various analytical techniques. The water quality was evaluated according to various standard values. For seawater desalination, the effect of temperature and membrane type on product water quality were investigated. For geothermal water desalination, effect of operating pressure and the membrane configuration on product water quality were investigated. Obtained results were compared with the water quality analyses results that produced using same systems a year ago at same conditions.
