Abstract
Ion imprinted polymer (IIP) material was prepared in two steps: (i) by forming a complex of thorium imprinted ion with thenoyltrifluoro acetone(TTA) and (ii) by thermally copolymerizing them with methyl methacrylate (MMA) as the functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linking monomer in presence of benzoyl peroxide(BP) as initiator and 2-methoxy ethanol as porogen. The IIP material formed was subsequently leached with 50% (v/v) HCl to obtain leached materials which then rebind thorium ions selectively from aqueous solutions. Corresponding non-imprinted polymer (NIP) materials were also prepared under the same conditions exactly as the IIP but in the absence of the thorium ion.In this study, thorium (IV) ion imprinted polymeric particlespoly(MMA-co-EGDMA) have been synthesized as an adsorbent. Two different methods were used for this study. Optimum adsorption conditions were investigated in 4 steps. Ion binding studies were carried out by removing the thorium ions from the polymeric particles. Experiments with thorium nitrate and chloride form, have shown that the adsorption of thorium ion is independent from their anion form.In this study, optimum adsorption conditions were determined at pH 4. Adsorption studies werecarried out by ICP-OES.Adsorption efficiency was 92%.Due to the high selectivity shown by this new material for thorium ions, it has been successfully employed for the selective separation and preconcentration of thorium ions from aqueous systems. Extensive characterizations of IIP (both unleached and leached) were done using TGA, IR and BET-surface area and pore size analysis.
