Y Augmentation of the natural anticandidial activity of lymphocytes by Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B and lipopolysaccharide : In this study, it was observed that Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B (SEB) and lipopolysaccharide from Serratia marcescens, enhanced the natural cell-mediated cytotoxicity, as assessed by the Natural Anticandidial Index Method. The effect was comparable to the augmentation induced by recombinant IL-2. By using specific monoclonal antibodies and complement, the effector cells that have the anticandidial activity were identified as Leu lib (CD16 ), like the classical NK cells. The majority of the r IL-2 responsive effector cells were also in this subgroup. The cytotoxicity-enhancing activity of SEB was significantly decreased when the effector cells were depleted by monoclonal antibodies and complement. The isolation of nontoxic derivatives from these bacterial products, that have the same immunological properties as the native toxin, and that can be used in clinical immunotherapy, will be of importance in antitumoral and antimicrobial therapy.en_US
