Y: Coronary arteries of patients suffering from angina pectoris but found to have normal coronary angiograms, known as `Syndrome X`, were examined by intravascular ultrasonography. The study group with 22 patients were compared to a control group of 12 people with normal coronary arteriograms and without angina pectoris. In the study group, despite normal coronary arteriograms, in 16 patients {% 72.7) small eccentric intimal plaques were found with intravascular ultrasonography. There were no plaques in the control group. The mean intimal thickness was 0.38 ± 0.09 mm in the study group where as mean intimal thickness of the control group was found 0.14 ± 0.03 mm. The difference between two groups was significant (p < 0.001). There was no significant differencee between the medial thicknesses of two groups. We believe, it could be concluded that in patients with normal coronary angiograms and angina pectoris who were defined as `Syndrome X` intravascular ultrasonography may reveal abnormalities showing that coronary atherosclerosis has begun and coronary angiogram alone may be inefficient to decide that coronary arteries are norma 1. 23en_US
