Abstract
In this study, the effect of splitting and shaving before tanning processes on leather quality and environment were investigated. Within this scope, leathers were processed with the classical, splitting after liming and shaving after pickling methods and also by tanning chrome, vegetable and wet-white as shoe upper leather. On the manufactured leather samples, some physical tests, chemical analyses were carried out and chemical oxygen demand for waste floats, total nitrogen tests were applied furthermore, tanned solid waste amounts were determined. Chemical savings and field productivity were designated followed by the processes of splitting after liming and shaving after pickling, via examining field changes.Average values of the entire physical tests on the leathers that were split or shaved before tanning, were determined to be higher or similar compared to classical tanning method. Free fatty acid content and the substances soluble in dichloromethane as chemical properties, were consistent with standard values in all tanning types and methods. The percentage of chromium oxide of the leathers treated with chrome was higher than standard values within all tanning methods. In vegetable tanning, calculation of degree of tannage was high for splitting after liming method compared to classical method and was low for shaving after pickling method. In this study, tanned solid waste and waste water amounts for several processes were reduced; chemical saving was achieved; besides from tanned leathers, the gained area was increased.
