dc.description.abstract51 SUMMARY Wc have studied the level of erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase enzyme found in the defense mechanism against malondialdehyde which is the end product of free oxygen radicals and lipid peroxide on rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis patients and the control group. An addition, ESR, RF, Hb, CRP and rheumatoid arthritis Ritchie articular index on patient groups were also investigated. The result obtained revealed that rheumatoid arthritis malondialdehyde was determined to be significantly increased as compared to other groups, though it was observed that glutathione peroxidase was decreased. İn the case of ankylosing spondylitis patients, the decrease in the level of glutathione peroxidase only in the control group has been found significant. However, no relationship could be found between clinical and labaratory parameters of the patients and glutathione peroxidase. Despite the fact that we have applied an anti-rheumatic treatment to all our patients, we think that only medical treatment is not sufficient to prevent the effect of free oxygen radicals, due to the reason that malondialdehyde remained high while glutathione peroxidase decreased. Today, it is an accepted fact that free oxygen radicals exist in the rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis. However, further research is required to found new alternations for treatment of decrease of enzymes which have an effect on free oxygen radicals as well as preventing their harmful effects.en_US
