Abstract
ABSTRACT This thesis is devoted to designing a new ESP syllabus for the third- year undergraduate students at the University of Çukurova. Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Agricultural Economics. The first chapter of the thesis describes the purpose, and the scope of the study, as well as the problem that exists. The second chapter includes a review of the literature so that major trends in syllabus design have been stated - and the importance of the Notional /Functional Approach to course design has been emphasised. In addition, a brief review of discourse analysis has been given from scientific perspective, and reading and writing skills to be focused on in the programme have been defined. The third chapter deals with the general principles of syllabus design, and it is in this chapter that our model course design is introduced. Chapter four presents the actual syllabus designed on the basis of the detailed research. The design consists of 12 sections, each one dealing with different aspects in the science of Agricultural Economics. The same section of the study also includes the implementation of the syllabus, and the analysis of test results administered, during the research. The final chapter includes the short summary of the study with conclusions, and recommendations.
